The Danger Zone
If fresh concrete freezes before it reaches 500 PSI strength (usually first 24 hours),it loses 50% of its final strength permanently. The water inside turns to ice crystals and shatters the internal structure.
The 3 Pillars of Winter Concrete
1. Heat Modifications
- Use hot water (up to 140°F) in the mix.
- Store bags indoors overnight.
- Warm up the rebar/ground (never pour on frozen ground!).
2. Chemical Accelerators
- Add Calcium Chloride (1-2% by weight of cement).
- Use "Non-Chloride" accelerator if using rebar (chloride rusts steel).
- Use Type III (High Early Strength) cement.
3. Insulation
- Cover immediately after finishing.
- Use plastic sheets + concrete blankets.
- Keep covered for at least 3-7 days.
Mixing Tips for Cold Weather
Add Chemicals to Water First
Dissolve your accelerator in the mix water before adding to the cement. Never throw dry pellets into the mix (they cause weak spots).
Don't Overwater
Cold air slows evaporation. Bleed water will sit on top longer. Use the minimum water necessary (low slump) to reduce freeze risk.
Keep Mixer Running
If using a gas mixer, keep it running. A warm engine helps, but more importantly, moving concrete generates its own small amount of heat through hydration.
Need Speed?
In winter, speed is survival. Don't hand mix. Use a powered mixer to get the concrete poured and covered fast.
