3 Factors That Increase Cost
Drum Material
Poly (plastic) drums are often cheaper ($) and easier to clean. Steel drums ($$) last longer but can rust. Thick-gauge steel drums ($$$) are for heavy commercial use.
Engine Brand
A mixer with a generic engine costs significantly less than one with a Honda GX or Kohler engine. However, the name-brand engine pays for itself in reliability and resale value.
Tow Bar & Suspension
"Portable" mixers with small wheels are cheap. Highway-towable mixers require suspension, lights, and high-speed bearings, adding $1000+ to the cost.
Buying Used: Is it worth it?
Used mixers typically sell for 40-60% of new price. Watch out for:
- Dried Concrete: Hardened concrete inside the drum is extremely hard to remove and unbalances the mixer.
- Worn Ring Gear: Check the teeth around the drum. If they are razor sharp or chipped, it needs replacement ($300+).
- Engine Smoke: Blue smoke means burning oil (engine worn out).
